Spring Break Day 4-Fort Gaines

Uncle Rod showed the kids where he works and all the stops he has to make on his plane trip back and forth.

While on Dauphin Island, we visited Fort Gaines. It is a Naval Fort built in 1821.

Fort Gaines is most famous for its part during the Civil War.

Fort Gaines was involved in the Battle of Mobile Bay during the Civil War. The Union fought the battle there to get control of Mobile Bay and won. Mobile had been the last city in that area not yet defeated so once the union won at Fort Gaines, they could blockade Mobile.

The kids really enjoyed climbing all over the fort and going down little secret tunnels and twisty and windy staircases.

This is where they rolled the cannons up.

The kids waving out of that little window below.

The kitchens area.

The guns manning Mobile Bay.

The kids really enjoyed learning about the toilets and how they flushed every time the tide came in and pulled it all out to sea.

The anchor of the USS Hartford. It was the ship that won the battle for control of Mobile Bay in 1864.
