The first track meet of the season was the Richland Jamboree. They were offering a 1500 steeplechase so Nathan opted for that for his race. He also threw the discus.
Firstly, the steeplechase had a lot of excitement. During the first water jump, a Richland runner accidentally jumped right on top of our Hanford runner who was in first place! It looked like our guy was giving him a piggy back ride since he jumped right on top of him. The Hanford guy looked like he had the wind knocked out of him but slowed down after that. Nathan had been right behind them so wasn't involved but he ended up passing our other guy to get second place in the race overall. There were 4 runners. He ran it in 5:27.
There is no proof of this time. Since they finished at a different place that wasn't the official finish line, they hand timed it. They wrote down the times on a sticky note and apparently lost it as they never managed to post the results online.
On the final lap, Nathan banged his knee good on the final barrier as he was tiring and getting over the barriers was getting harder.
After the race, he bragged he had earned "first blood of the season" for the Hanford track team. It is most likely true as this race was the first race of the entire season since it was the first race of the meet.
After the steeplechase, Jeremy and I drove up to Hanford to watch Elizabeth play a varsity match. Our number 3 varsity singles player had a band thing so they put Elizabeth in that spot against another 4A school Lewis and Clark. It was basically just for her to see what kind of level she'd have to be at to play singles varsity as she lost quickly 6-0, 6-0. They were playing a 2 out of 3.
Then, Jeremy and I drove back down to Richland and got there just in time to see Nathan throw the discus.
He got a HUGE PR. He threw 82'11" for an 8 foot PR. He'd been lifting a lot of weights over the winter hoping to get stronger and throw further. It worked!
Mead was also at this meet. They have the #1 ranked high school discus thrower in the country. They have to close down the track while he throws since he throws so far. His PR is 218 feet. He threw 210 feet at this meet and the next closest competitor threw 144 feet.
The weather was absolutely perfect today so we loved being outside all day!
