Trip Day 12-Monticello

The next day, we headed inland. Our first stop was Richmond. We were going to try to stop at the capitol building. But that place was HARD to get it!!!  We never even saw the capitol building as it was impossible to see it without parking somewhere and then hiking in between other buildings. We've visited a lot of capitols and they are usually centerpieces of the city they are in. This one was hidden away. We found it very strange. We did see the old confederate capitol building. It was also shoved behind a bunch of newer buildings. (I understand why that one is shoved behind a bunch of other buildings), but the main capitol being so hard to get to was very odd.
We just continued to drive on to Charlottesville. When we got there, we took a driving tour of the University of Virginia which was founded by Thomas Jefferson and some of the buildings there were designed by him as well.

This was driving through the University of Virginia. You could tell Jefferson designed this building!

We then drove up to Monticello. This is a copy of the Declaration of Independence they keep there. There aren't many left, but of course there is one here.

Thomas Jefferson's writing tablet where he wrote parts of the Declaration of Independence.

Another desk he wrote at

Monticello was absolutely beautiful. The views were amazing.

A cool rainstorm rolled through while we were there. It made things nice and cool. That's the thing we liked most about Virginia. The further north we drove, the cooler it seemed to be. It was still hot, but not ridiculously hot like further south. It was manageable here!

We did the walking tour of the gardens and the slave tour. Here are some pictures from the garden tour.

Here are lots of pretty flowers.

The walking path that leads back down to the main museum. It was hot, so we took the bus.

In the gardens.

We finally got to go on the house tour. We had a time we had to be there. Here's his library.

Here's another office of his.

His bedroom.

Dining room.

Breakfast room.

Elizabeth admiring some of the dishes.

The tunnels to the kitchens.

Another beautiful view.

On the bus ride down, we stopped and saw Jefferson's grave site.

It was a very fascinating historical tour.
