The next morning, we visited the Museum of Natural History.
Statue of Teddy Roosevelt. Teddy Roosevelt started the "Museum of Natural History" in his bedroom when he was 8 years old. Several things from his collection are in the museum.
We started in the dinosaur area. It was very crowded on a Sunday.
It's unbelievable that this dinosaur actually existed. We couldn't believe how BIG it was!!!
There was an entire wing of animals that went extinct a long time ago.
Most of these animals went extinct long before humans were even around. It was incredible!
More animals that existed before humans were around and somehow died out.
I was aware of the dinosaurs but had no idea there were so many others that were around after dinosaurs but before humans.
A huge armadillo that no longer exists.
More dinosaurs.
Taxidermy on display.
The taxidermy elephants were really neat.
At first we thought this might be real and they somehow transported it from Easter Island. Nope. It's fake.
Taxidermy elephants.
Taxidermy buffalo. There were just floors of these taxidermy animals. The kids thought it was great to be so close to real scary animals! They can't hurt them here!
A Native American canoe. This thing was HUGE.
Lucy. Her bones are 3 million years old and are the oldest known nearly complete skeleton of the early hominids.
Elizabeth loved this huge meteor!!
Some of my early relatives farmed in Duchess County New York so it was neat to read about farming from the area.
The famous blue whale. Amazing how huge it was!
Some of Teddy Roosevelt's gear.
After we visited, we found that the subway was closed in the area we wanted to be. We could get to the museum, but not leave. Grrr....
We had to hike half the length of Central Park! Our feet were already hurting from 4 hours in the museum so we were not happy about the subway not running.
Luckily, it was not too hot of a day so at least that part was good. It was just a long walk on tired feet. We really missed our car at this point!!
