Our allergist suggested we take Nathan to a nutritionist. Today, we headed to Sacred Heart Children's Hospital to visit with her. Truthfully, we didn't learn too much we didn't already know. She did however, help us to figure out a way to use less formula.
I finished nursing Nathan a couple of weeks ago. He was just done, and I was sick of not being able to eat anything.
Anyway, the formula we use costs about $25 a gallon. He's been going through about 2 gallons a week. He drinks so much, because he needs the fat and protein from it since he can't eat so many other foods that people normally eat to get these nutrients. If you do the math, that is over $200 a month just on his special milk. I don't want to have to go back to work just to buy this stuff!
She helped us figure a way for him to still get what needs, but if we use rice or oat milk with a few scoops of the formula powder, the cost should only be about $10-12 dollars a gallon, which is a huge improvement.
The other problem is that kids until age 2 need lots of fat in their diet for brain growth. Since Nathan can't have many fatty foods, we had to figure out a way to incorporate more of these. He'll be eating a lot of avacado and I'll try to dump olive or canola oil on a lot of stuff. Hopefully it will work!
We found out he weighs 23 pounds, is 30 inches tall, and is in the 90% percentile for head circumference!! His head is apparently really big! Well, Jeremy has a big head, and one size fits all hats never fit, so I guess that's where Nathan got it.

YAY For big heads! I'm really glad he has a big head too. Eli has been in the 95th percentile since birth (at his 18 month appointment it was in the 96th!). Our boys are going to be the smartest in their classes with those wonderfully big brains. :) I'm excited you'll be able to save some money with the new formula combo - that is always stressful when you think about how much you spend on that.
We can sympathize... we did the whole nutritionist thing with Reed, because his gastroenterologist though he was underweight (below 3rd percentile).
I lost faith in modern medicine after the whole experience. After a few months, I just asked, "is he gaining weight", they said yes, 3rd percentile means, for 30 out of 1000 people, that's normal... so unless there's something else, I don't see why we need to pay you $40 a week for you to tell us nothing we don't already know....
BTW, Reed has a huge head too... must have been something in the beer at WSU.
